You did everything you were told would create a good life. So why does work still cost you so much?
You earned the degrees.
You collected the credentials.
You accepted more responsibility.
You became the person everyone could depend on.
You entered the mental health field because you wanted your work to matter. But meaningful work can still be exploitative work.
You may be carrying clients, students, supervisees, colleagues, programs, organizations, and communities—while having very little space to consider what all this responsibility is costing you.
You learned how to survive demanding workplaces, inequitable systems, shifting expectations, and jobs that continued to ask for more than they gave back.
On paper, you may look successful. But behind the accomplishments, you may be overwhelmed, overextended, overworked, or overthinking your next move.
You may be asking yourself:
Can I afford to leave?
What would I do instead?
How much money do I actually need to make?
What kind of work do I actually have the capacity for?
Why do I keep becoming the person who carries everything?
Can I continue helping others without abandoning myself?
Would entrepreneurship give me more freedom or create more work?
Would academia, leadership, consulting, or program development give me more freedom?
How many clients, students, supervisees, or responsibilities do I have the capacity to carry?
Am I burned out with my workplace—or with the profession itself?
What would it mean to remain a mental health professional without practicing in the same way?
You know something needs to change. But the answer is not always as simple as leaving your job.
You have bills. Benefits matter. People depend on you. Starting over has consequences. And the option that best reflects your values may not be the option that can meet all of your needs right now.
You do not need someone telling you to “just quit,” follow your passion, or set better boundaries inside a system that continues to benefit from your over functioning.
You need space to understand the pattern—and a process for deciding what comes next.
Your next career decision should account for your whole life
Finding a new job will not automatically change your relationship with work.
A different title, organization, or business can become another place where you overwork, overfunction, and prove your value through how much you can carry.
Without understanding the beliefs and expectations influencing your choices, it is easy to recreate the same pattern somewhere new:
Your competence earns you more labor instead of more freedom.
You become the dependable one again.
Your responsibilities increase while your boundaries disappear.
You accept work that meets one need while compromising five others.
You make decisions from urgency, exhaustion, guilt, or fear.
Your well-being becomes the price of your success.
A sustainable career decision must account for more than your interests, strengths, and qualifications.
It must consider your financial requirements, caregiving responsibilities, workload, schedule, capacity, desired autonomy, benefits, values, nervous system, and the actual life you want your work to support.
The goal is not simply to find work you enjoy.
The goal is to decide how much of your life work gets to have.
Introducing Work By Design™
Work By Design™ is a career and life coaching experience for Black women mental health professionals who are ready to reconsider how helping, work, identity, responsibility, culture, and survival have shaped their lives.
Together, we will examine the internal beliefs and external systems influencing your decisions. Then, you will define what you need from work now—not what you were taught to pursue, tolerate, or prove.
This is not a formula for finding your dream job.
It is a structured process for making more honest, informed, and sustainable decisions about work.
You may decide to:
Remain in clinical practice with a more sustainable caseload
Transition to a different mental health setting
Move into supervision, leadership, teaching, research, or program development
Negotiate compensation, workload, flexibility, or responsibilities
Build or restructure a private practice
Explore consulting, training, speaking, or evaluation work
Combine employment, clinical work, and entrepreneurship more intentionally
Reduce direct-service work without leaving the profession entirely
Transfer your skills into another profession or industry
Decide whether you want to remain in the mental health field
The goal is not to push you toward a predetermined answer.
The goal is to help you make decisions that account for your whole life.
Meet Dr. Cecily Moore
I am Dr. Cecily Moore, a counselor educator, licensed professional counselor, career counselor, researcher, and coach. I have worked across clinical practice, higher education, supervision, program development, and professional leadership.
My work centers Black women’s relationships with work, identity, responsibility, trauma, and the Strong Black Woman identity. I understand that career decisions do not happen in a vacuum. They are shaped by race, gender, culture, family, money, caregiving, workplace systems, access, and the expectations we have learned to carry.
I created Work By Design™ because Black women deserve career support that does not measure success by how much labor we can endure.
What You’ll Learn
-
Module 1: Reflect
Through critical reflection, the Career Genogram, and the Labor Audit™️ you will trace the origins of your relationship with work and begin to understand how your beliefs about work, worth, success, and responsibility were formed.
You’ll examine how race, gender, family, culture, capitalism, and the Strong Black Woman schema have shaped what you learned to expect from yourself, what you believe you owe to others, and who you have learned you need to be in order to succeed.
You will uncover how WSC and Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema has shaped your relationship with work, including what you learned about success, productivity, responsibility, rest, and what it means to be "good employee."
From there, you'll map how you got here, tracing the experiences, messages, expectations, and environments that shaped your beliefs about work and learning how those beliefs are formed, stored, and reinforced over time.
-
Module 2: Define
You’'ll learn the Psychology of Belief so that you can begin to intentionally define a new relationship with work.
One grounded in your values, priorities, financial needs, boundaries, capacity, and self-definition, rather than survival, obligation, achievement, or other people's expectations.
This becomes the foundation for the decisions you make next, so you can stop organizing your life around work and other people's expectations and start building a life where work has a place, but work is no longer the organizing principle of your life.
-
Module 3: Align
Once you’ve defined what matters most to you, you’ll use the Work by Design™ Decision Filter, nervous system regulation, boundary work, and Micro Experiments™ to begin making decisions differently.
You’ll experiment with restructuring your responsibilities, relationships, income, schedule, and career around your values, capacity, and needs, creating a relationship with work that supports your humanity rather than consumes it.
-
Module 4: Integrate
You will leave with a sustainable way of making decisions that helps you organize your life around your humanity rather than your work.
You’ll begin integrating your new relationship with work into your everyday life, making choices that prioritize your well-being, honor your capacity, and reflect what actually matters to you.
Instead of returning to old patterns of overworking, overfunctioning, and self-neglect, you’ll practice new patterns rooted in self-trust, reciprocity, values alignment, and a life that makes room for you.
Your Work By Design™ tools
Career Genogram™
Explore the beliefs, experiences, expectations, and survival strategies surrounding work across your family and community.
This helps you recognize which definitions of success you inherited and decide what you want to carry forward.
Labor Audit™
Identify where your paid, unpaid, emotional, relational, caregiving, and invisible labor currently goes.
This helps you see the full amount of work your life is holding—not only the responsibilities listed in your job description.
Psychology of Beliefs
Examine the beliefs influencing how you work, what you tolerate, and what you believe you must prove.
This helps you separate your values from internalized expectations.
Values Reclamation
Move beyond choosing values from a generic list. You will examine where your values came from, how culture and systems have shaped them, and what practicing those values would require.
Work By Design™ Decision Filter
Compare multiple career and life options across your values, needs, capacity, financial reality, costs, and tradeoffs.
This helps you make complex decisions without expecting one option to meet every need.
Nervous-System Check-Ins
Notice how urgency, fear, shutdown, activation, and survival responses influence your decisions.
This helps you create enough internal space to respond more intentionally.
Boundary and Integration Plan
Translate what you have learned into specific boundaries, conversations, experiments, and changes.
This helps your insight become something you can practice in your daily life.

FAQ
Is Work By Design™ therapy?
No. Work By Design™ is a coaching service focused on career and life decision-making.
We may discuss identity, beliefs, work patterns, capacity, and nervous-system awareness, but coaching does not include mental-health diagnosis or treatment.
If you currently need mental-health treatment, therapy may be a more appropriate form of support.
Do I need to be ready to leave my job?
No. Work By Design™ is not a “quit your job” program.
You may decide to leave, but you may also decide to stay, negotiate, reduce your workload, strengthen your boundaries, pursue an internal opportunity, explore entrepreneurship, or gather more information.
Is Work By Design™ only for therapists in private practice?
No. Work By Design™ is for Black women mental health professionals working across community mental health, nonprofit organizations, healthcare systems, higher education, schools, government agencies, group practices, private practice, consulting, and other professional settings.
You may be employed, self-employed, moving between the two, or exploring a different way of working altogether. Private practice or entrepreneurship may be one option, but it is not treated as the automatic path to freedom. The goal is to determine which work structure best supports your financial needs, capacity, values, well-being, and the life you want to create.
What if I do not know what I want to do next?
You do not need to arrive with a complete plan.
Work By Design™ helps you understand what you need, identify your options, and recognize what information or experience is still missing.
“Need more information” is a valid outcome. You do not have to manufacture certainty.
What if the option I want is not financially possible right now?
We will not ignore that reality or shame you for it.
Instead, we will examine the tension between what aligns with your values and what your life currently requires. From there, you can identify potential supports, transitional steps, micro-experiments, and longer-term strategies.
Will you tell me which option to choose?
No. My role is not to make your decision for you.
I will help you examine the beliefs, pressures, needs, possibilities, risks, and tradeoffs attached to your options so you can make a more informed decision.
Can I participate if I live outside Tennessee, Florida, or Washington, D.C.?
Yes. Because Work By Design™ is coaching rather than therapy, it is available to clients nationwide, subject to the terms of the coaching agreement.
How much time will I need between sessions?
Plan to spend approximately 2-3 Hours Per Week between sessions reflecting, completing exercises, or practicing what you have identified.
The work is designed to support your life—not become another source of overwhelming labor.
Do you offer a payment plan?
Yes. You can pay $997 in full or select the three-payment option.
The payment plan consists of one payment of $333.00, followed by two monthly payments of $333.00.
Can I speak with you before enrolling?
Yes. If you have questions or want help determining whether Work By Design™ meets your needs, you may book a sales call.
A sales call is optional. You do not need to schedule one before enrolling.
